Sometimes grief visits you at 1:05 am. Sometimes grief visits you on a Friday. Sometimes grief visits you while you’re busy meeting your deadlines. Sometimes grief visits you when you’re writing a play. Sometimes grief visits you when you’re listening to your favorite song. Sometimes grief visits you when you look out the window, watching the kids play in a foreign land. Sometimes grief visits you when you receive a random email from a friend. Sometimes grief visits you when you’re scrolling through your social media. Sometimes grief visits you when you’re having a cup of coffee at 4:30 pm. Sometimes grief visits you when you take that hot shower after a long and exhausting day. Only then will you realize that grief is not merely a visitor. It’s there. It has made a permanent home in your blood, in every fiber of your being. It will stay there forever. And perhaps, one of these days, after all the hurt, all the late-night sobbing, all the moments of screaming until it feels like you could die, you will find its beauty. You’ll realize that it’s also a wonderful gift, that the experience of grief is also one of human beings’ privileges.
